Custom-Built Smart Aquaponics System for Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)
We were honoured to be commissioned by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to successfully design and produce a custom-built, research-grade Smart Aquaponics System.
• Core Research Functionality
This project required the system to not only have aesthetic and viewing value but also to serve as a scientific research platform, providing precise parameter control capabilities.
The system features adjustable key environmental parameters such as light wavelength, water flow rate, and air volume. This enables the university to efficiently extract and analyze various cultivation data, thus driving research in agricultural technology.
• Engineering Challenges in a Complex Environment
Since the system is deployed within the restaurant setting at HKUST, we had to address a series of stringent on-site integration issues, including:
o Light Pollution Control: Ensuring the growth lighting does not interfere with the dining environment.
o Low-Noise Operation: Minimizing the sound generated by water flow and air pumps to maintain dining quality.
o Environmental Adaptability: Reducing the impact of restaurant traffic and ambient changes on plant growth.
o Odor Elimination: Utilizing professional design to effectively reduce any system-related odours.

After three generations of system prototyping and optimization, we successfully delivered a system that meets all complex requirements, and it is now fully operational at HKUST.
