Outdoor Learning Space Man Kwan QualiEd College

To elevate the quality of the learning environment for students, Man Kwan Pak Kau College initiated a project to optimize its outdoor learning space. Our company is privileged to contribute to this meaningful endeavor, collaborating with architect Ida and Tsuchima Ceramic Studio to create an innovative learning environment that seamlessly integrates handmade ceramic art with outdoor furniture, aiming to spark students’ creativity and foster a deeper connection with nature.

Throughout the design process, we embraced the theme of “Harmony with Nature,” striving to craft an outdoor learning space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, enabling students to learn, interact, and grow in a natural setting. We proposed the following two core design elements, which exemplify the harmonious blend of nature and education:

1. Streamlined Bamboo Resting Pavilion

Designed by architect Ida, the resting pavilion features a streamlined bamboo structure for shade, combining elegant aesthetics with effective protection from sunlight, offering students a comfortable outdoor gathering space. Drawing inspiration from the flowing lines of nature, the pavilion uses sustainably sourced bamboo paired with minimalist terrazzo seating, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. Students can engage in group discussions, read, or relax here, experiencing the perfect integration of nature and learning.

2. Herbal Planting Zone with Ceramic Integration

To deepen students’ engagement with nature and traditional culture, we incorporated a herbal planting zone within the outdoor learning space. Students can cultivate medicinal herbs on campus, gaining hands-on experience in plant care and learning about traditional herbal knowledge, fostering respect for both nature and culture. In collaboration with Tsuchima Ceramic Studio, students created unique ceramic pieces that are artfully integrated into the outdoor furniture, such as decorative partitions or artistic accents on terrazzo surfaces, infusing the space with distinctive artistic charm and the students’ personal touch.

3. Terrazzo and Stainless Steel Bending Craft Leisure Area

To enable students to engage more deeply with nature and traditional culture, we have established a medicinal herb planting area within the outdoor learning space. Students can personally plant and care for medicinal herbs on campus, learning about plant cultivation and traditional Chinese medicine knowledge, fostering respect for nature and culture. Meanwhile, the Tsuchima Pottery Studio assists students in creating unique ceramic works, which are skillfully integrated into the furniture design of the outdoor space. For example, these handmade ceramics are used as decorative partitions or artistic accents on terrazzo surfaces, adding a distinctive artistic atmosphere and the students’ personal touch to the space.
